The Fuel Control Story.
Fuel Control, established in 1987, is an Australian owned family business that has been servicing Australian Motorsport for over 20 Years. John Thompson was contracted by Shell Australia in 1987 to help create the Shell Ultra Australian Touring Car Series.
JT introduced trackside foam signs, a mobile winners dais, officials caps and vests, brake markers, winners laurels, posters, stickers, Shell girls, trophies, pit garage signs, and many other items. The Shell Championship Series grew quickly with ever increasing crowds of spectators, and the beginnings of a very successful TV coverage. Corporate hospitality soared. The Shell Series became “the” motor sport venues. Today’s very successful V8 Supercar Championship still uses the same basic ideas that were developed in the Shell Series.
In 1987 fuel varied greatly between Queensland and Victoria, due to differences in the winter and summer fuel blends. Allegations of cheating became quite serious. Tom Smith of Shell decided to eliminate the problem by arranging to have a fuel source at every event.

And so, at Amaroo Park February 1988, the Isotainer bulk fuel supply system was born. Chemtrans supplied an Isotainer full of Shell unleaded to every round where JT dispensed it into the Teams “churns”. The system developed to the extent that a 300,000 litre tank was filled at the start of every year and all fuel was drawn from this single supply. There was no possibility of any fuel variance. The bulk fuel also eliminated the need for Teams to bring their own fuel to the tracks. |
Today’s use by the V8 Supercars of E85, was first proposed by JT in August 2007.
The fuel system has been further developed over many years and now is approved in every State of Australia. The system meets with the Australian Standards and is a prime example of how Motorsport venue fuel depots should be. In 21 years we have never failed to supply, we have never had a spill, and we have never had a fire. Safety and reliability are our prime concerns.
